The fascinating story of Dualit begins with Jewish German inventor Max Gort-Barten. Having fled the Nazis to England, he served in the British Army throughout WWII. In 1946, he set up in Camberwell, southeast London to manufacture his inventions, employing not only his whole family, but also the residents of the street!
The first successful product was a patented commercial toaster, upon which the company's classic range has been built and developed, later even adopting NASA technology.
The Dualit toaster has a solid, cult status within commercial kitchens, finding itself onboard the QE2 and described by Gordon Ramsay as a "wonderful beast".
In 2003, the company moved to Crawley, West Sussex, where the products are still made by hand, by individuals. In fact, if one breaks down, a unique code underneath means it goes back to the very person who put it together!
Max was awarded a CBE in 1989, for services to the British manufacturing industry.
