Manufactured by Iittala
These bowls form part of the Aalto collection whose shape was inspired by a lake he grew up by, and whose vases originally sported the curious name 'Eskimo Woman's Leather Breaches'. This odd moniker was to hide the identity of Aalto, the young but already well known architect, when he entered them into a Finnish design competition (which he won!).
The fluid, organic shapes are very much Aalto's calling card and both his product and architectural designs were hugely influenced by nature.
He believed that the purpose of the shapes he created would be left open to interpretation by the user. A vase, a sculpture, a bowl, you decide.
Still meticulously hand blown by Iittala's masters, this is widely recognised as a design classic.
