Ceramic vase with glaze in burgundy, grass green and matt oxidised copper.

Sottsass was born in 1917 and, following a degree in architecture set up his own studio in 1947. It was his collaboration with Olivetti that catapulted him into the public conscious where he designed the first electronic calculator and the famous Valentine typewriter, one of which is held in the permanent collection at the Museum of Modern Art, NY.

In 1980 he founded the firm Sottsass Associates with Marco Zanini, Aldo Cibic and Matteo Thun. Only a year later and disillusioned with the black and white simplicity of current design he retreated to the Italian alps with a group of like minded friends including Michael Graves and George Sowden. The intention was to injecte a sense of colour and playfulness back in to the stale design world. The result was of course the highly influential "Memphis" avant-garde movement.
